George Cassel Matthews, DDS, 93, of Westmont, passed away October 26, 2017.  Born June 1, 1924, son of Dr. Donald H. and Miriam (Cassel) Matthews.  Preceded in death by parents, brother Donald H., Jr.  Survived by his wife of 68 years, Anne Reber, his sister Miriam Haddad, Ormond Beach, FL, and brother- in- law William T. Reber (Susan), Canton, OH.  Survived by three children, James H. Matthews (Valerie), Moon Twp., PA; Jane C. Austin (Dr. Charles), Mechanicsburg, PA; and Dr. John R. Matthews (Nancy), Murrysville, PA.  Also survived by 7 grandchildren; James R. Matthews (Rebecca), Jade E. Lundgren (Dr. Dane), Dr. Daniel C. Austin (Julianne), Dr. Matthew R. Austin (Katharine), John H. Austin, Lea C. Matthews, and John W. R. Matthews.  Also survived by 8 great-grandchildren.  He was a graduate of Westmont High School, attended the University of Michigan, Juniata College, and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1951 from the University of Pennsvlvania Dental School.  He practiced dentistry with his father in Johnstown and then with his son, Dr. John, and retired after 40 years.  He was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving on the Board of Trustees, Elders, and various committees.  He was president of the Cambria County Dental Society and of the 7th District Dental Society.  He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge Scottish Rite; Jaffa Shrine and the Royal Order of the Jesters.  He served on Westmont Borough Council and was a member of Johnstown Kiwanis Club.  He served with the 102nd Infantry in Germany during WW II.  He was on the Grandview Cemetery Board and a member of Sunnehanna Country Club.  He enjoyed life playing golf, tennis, bowling, ping pong, working in the yard and visiting with family and friends.  He was a master builder of balsa wood airplanes.  Friends will be received from 11:30 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, October 28 at the Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, Inc., 921 Menoher Blvd., with the funeral service immediately following, Rev. Dr. Bruce Cadenhead, officiating.  Donations may be made in George’s memory to First Presbyterian Church, 309 Lincoln St., Johnstown, PA  15901
