To The Leis Family: Please accept my sincere sympathy. I also grew up with Joe, Bill and Rita on Maryland Avenue. The Leis boys were just nice, well mannered kids. This I will remember about Joe. Bill & Barb (Kasterko) Rushin

I offer my deepest sympathy and prayers to the whole Leis family. I remember Joe as a young boy growing up on Maryland Ave. I lived on Virginia Ave. but had friends on Maryland Ave. A whole group of us played together and sometimes got in trouble together. I remember Bill and Rita Bernardy, the Slezaks etc etc etc. Oh, they were the good old days. Joe was always such a fun kid to be around. You will all be in my prayers. I am a Sister of St Joseph---Mary Agnes Spampinato, CSJ

In these instances as I reflect on the loss of a friend and loved one, I can’t help but think about the person we mourn, from an individual and personal perspective. I think it is only human nature to assign roles to that person which is somewhat unique to us as individuals. That is, how did we interact with that individual and what role did they play in our lives? This in no way minimizes that loved one’s overall impact and value, but rather it illustrates personal and concrete ways in which that individual impacted people’s lives. Thus serving to further illustrate to those closest to the deceased, the vast and “real” impact he had on other’s lives. Most importantly I remember Joe as a man of faith and integrity, whose values and beliefs were clearly congruent with his actions. I know that he was a wonderful: man, son, brother, uncle, husband, father, father in-law, grandfather, and friend, who will be missed greatly. I also know he is now a great advocate in heaven for those close to him.

But as I indicated, all of us who knew Mr. Leis have our own personal “story”, relative to our interactions. I would like to share my “small” story. I will always think of Mr. Leis as the father of my oldest friend. Someone who always showed me kindness, and welcomed me into his home. I am sure there were times that Mr. Leis would have rather not had his son’s goofy friend hanging around all the time. However, he was always kind and patient, and willing to share a good story or spread some wisdom. I will always remember that kindness. Again, I know he was so much more to so many others, but I will always be grateful to Mr. (and Mrs.) Leis, and the family, for being so nice to me. I hope and pray that I show that type of kindness to my children’s friends. I also hope and pray that my kids know fathers of friends like Mr. Leis.
