Charles William Cabell Grigsby, Sr., 90, died peacefully in his Johnstown, PA home, September 3, 2018. Charles was a veteran of WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He served honorably for his country in the US Navy for 3 years beginning January 8, 1945, then as a fighter pilot and flight instructor with the US Air Force, until his retirement in December 1967, when he was discharged with full honors and the rank of Captain. Following his military service, Charles continued to serve his country as an air traffic controller with the FAA in Oberlin, OH, until his retirement in 1987. He also enjoyed being the Oberlin locksmith for 20 years, until retiring in 1997. Charles was born December 30, 1927, in Charleston, WV, to the late Robert and Alma (Cabell) Grigsby, and he was also preceded in death by his 1st wife Lena (Wheeler) Barnes; he was the 3rd oldest of 8 children, being preceded by brothers, Robert Towles Grigsby, Meredith Grigsby and Walter Grigsby; sister Almamae Jeane Grigsby; and brothers-in-law, Robert Brooks and Robert Moore. He is survived by his wife, Jessie (Haselrig) Grigsby; children Susan (Michael) White, Kelly Grigsby (Tony Jones), Michael (Mara) Grigsby, Jennifer Grigsby-Grier (Grant Grier), Danita Grigsby (John Dutton), and Charles, Jr. (Reichele) Grigsby, and also Maxine Trent, Patricia Crawley and Daniel (Robin ) Crawle; grandchildren, Bruce Jackson, Derek Jackson, Nicolya Williams, Alan Grigsby, Jarod Dickson, Michaela Grigsby, Jaron Grigsby, Joshua Grigsby and Maleah Grigsby; and several great-grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Moore and Gwendolyn Brooks; and brother Alton Grigsby; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. He is also survived by former wife Ramona (Cyrus) Grigsby and former in-laws A.L. Cyrus, Gabrielle Harrison and Clifford (Ada) Cyrus. Friends will be received on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 5-8 PM at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, Inc., 921 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown, and Saturday September 8, 2018, from 10:00 AM until the time of services at 11:00 AM, at Cambria A.M.E. ZionChurch, 409 Haynes St., Johnstown. Rev. James Johnson officiating.
