Richard Carver Redden

Richard Carver Redden, 73, Moxham, died July 8, 2017 at home.  He was born May 18, 1944 in Johnstown, the son of the late William and Nora (Jackson) Redden, Sr.  Preceded in death by brothers, William, Jr., Reggie and Donnie Redden and sister, Lois (Curtis) Haselrig.  Richard was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was devoted to his wife of over 40 years, the former Rita Kristofco, his daughter, Dana Clare Redden, Atlanta, GA and his son, David McMahon and grandsons, Gabriel and Julian McMahon, Huntingdon.  Richard was a 1973 graduate of The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.  He served in the United States Army Reserves. He retired from the Cambria County Probation and Parole Office in 2005 after a career of over 25 years. He served as firearms instructor for Cambria County and was an avid and competitive shooter.  Richard was also a lifelong member of the YMCA, where he had been Assistant Physical Director, an Aquatic and Judo Instructor and a member of the Leaders’ Corps. He held a second  degree black belt in Judo. He enjoyed playing racquetball on Sunday mornings at Roxbury Park and, in the 1970s, volleyball at Windber Rec and flag football on the By George Inn Team. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the annual Ameri-Serv Music Fest.  He was a member of the American Legion Post #294. Friends will be received from 4-8 PM, Wednesday at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, Inc., 921 Menoher Blvd.  Family and friends will meet at St. Patrick Catholic Church for a funeral Mass at 11 AM, Thursday, Rev. Walter J. Moll, Jr., Celebrant.  Private Interment Grandview Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations, may be made to the Greater Johnstown Community YMCA, 100 Haynes Street, Johnstown, PA 15901 in Richard’s memory.
