Anne Matthews Obituary

Anne Reber Matthews, 97, Johnstown, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2022.  Born on May 20, 1925 in Auburn, NY, daughter of James B. and Amelia Emma (Freiberger) Reber.  Preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 68 years, Dr. George C. Matthews; and brother William T. Reber.  Survived by her three children, James H. Matthews (Valerie), Moon Township, PA; Jane C. Austin (Dr. Charles), Mechanicsburg, PA; and Dr. John R. Matthews (Nancy), Murrysville, PA.  Also survived by seven grandchildren, James R. Matthews (Rebecca); Jade E. Lundgren (Dr. Dane); Dr. Daniel C. Austin (Julianne); Dr. Matthew R. Austin (Katharine); John H. Austin (Dr. Hanna Kemeny); Dr. Lea C. Matthews; and Dr. John W. R. Matthews; twelve great-grandchildren along with sister-in-law Susan DeVries Reber, North Canton, OH.  Anne was a graduate of Auburn High School in 1943 and received her diploma from Wilson College in Chambersburg in 1947, where she was vice president of her class.  She married her husband George in 1949 and moved to Johnstown when he joined his father in his dental practice in 1951.  Anne was a wonderful wife and mother, and a very loving grandmother and great-grandmother.  She enjoyed keeping in touch with old and new friends by sending greeting cards for most every occasion.  She was an accomplished golfer and was a one-time women’s golf champion at Sunnehanna Country Club and proud of having a hole-in-one.  Anne was a long-time member of the Women’s Golf Association of Western PA, playing Pittsburgh courses in both tournaments and in team play.  She represented Sunnehanna in the Greater Johnstown Golf tournaments.  Anne was an avid bridge player, a game that she truly enjoyed for over 75 years.  She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.  She also belonged to the Cambria County Dental Auxiliary and the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she spent many hours volunteering in both the Little Shop and in the Admissions office.  She was an honorary member of the Garden Club of Johnstown.  Anne loved reading and antiques, and in the past enjoyed art classes and painting.  She took photographs at every opportunity.  Anne was very proud of her family and leaves behind beautiful memories that her family and many friends will treasure.  Her kindness, love, and support will be greatly missed.  On Saturday, July 23rd, friends will be received from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, 921 Menoher Blvd.  Funeral service will begin at 1 PM, Revs. Chuck MacPherson & Jim Farrer, officiating.  There will be a private family entombment at Grandview Cemetery.  Donations may be made in Anne’s memory to First Presbyterian Church, 309 Lincoln St., Johnstown, PA  15901 or to your favorite local charity.
