Arne August Magi

Arne August Magi, 87, Brownstown, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away on July 16, 2021.

Arne was born, June 4, 1934 in Estonia, which he fled before the Soviet Union annexed it at the end of WWII, and then controlled it until it regained its independence in 1991. After he arrived in the United States at age 15, he made his new home in Johnstown.  He then worked for Peoples Natural Gas for 35 years where he made many friends. He served in the Army and Pennsylvania National Guard and was a volunteer fireman in Brownstown borough. As a member of First Lutheran Church, he helped prepare recital lunches and decorate the church for holidays. He enjoyed the outdoors, and his garden was his pride and joy.  He almost always had a camera in his hands taking pictures of family, friends, the city, and nature.  Over the years he also enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing.  Cooking, baking and upholstering can also be added to his many talents. He enjoyed telling stories about his life, and would strike up a conversation with anyone who would listen.

He was preceded in death by his parents August and Hilda and siblings Linda Ludig, Lehta Kuljus, Heino Magi, and Rani Magi making him the last surviving member of his family.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sondra Graham Magi, his children Kristi Magi, Dana Lewis (Jim), and Rani Magi, his grandchildren Anthony Allison, Aleksander Magi, Hannah Lewis, Isaac Lewis, and Abby Lewis and his great granddaughter Hayden Allison.

Calling hours will be held from 6-8 pm at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary on Tuesday July 20. The funeral will be at First Lutheran Church on Vine St. in Johnstown at 11 am on Wednesday, July 21 with an hour of visitation prior to the service.  Rev.  Walter Startzel officiating.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to First Lutheran Church.
