Dessie Jenkins Obituary

Dessie Mae McDaniel Jenkins, 92, went home to be with the Lord on May 10, 2026. She was born on October 18, 1933, in Bishopville, South Carolina.

Dessie lived life her own way. She was strong-minded, independent, funny, outspoken, and full of personality. She loved hard, said what was on her mind, and brought laughter to the people around her. Whether through a story, a joke, or simply her presence, Dessie left an impression on everyone who knew her. She lived her life with strength and honesty and carried herself with resilience through every season of life.

After spending many years in South Carolina, Dessie returned to Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where she spent her later years surrounded by family and lifelong connections. Upon her return to Johnstown, Dessie became a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church and also attended St. James Missionary Baptist Church.

Dessie was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Pauline McDaniel; her stepfather, Sam Nash Young; her husband, Daniel Jenkins; her son, McKenneth McDaniel; son-in-law, James Myers II; her sister, Eular Mae Coleman; brothers, James and Mallie McDaniel; stepbrothers, James “Sambo” Williams Sr. and Herbert Gray; sisters-in-law, Janie Richardson, Lois McGhee, Ruby Williams, and Ida Jenkins; daughter-in-law Betty McDaniel; and grandchildren Stephen Holmes, Victoria Gibson, and Royale Morris.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Rose Elaine (Benjamin) Gibson and Roxanne Myers; stepchildren Surina, Forest, Dana, Windy, Henry Harvey, and Donald Moody; in-laws Pearly (Cathy) Jenkins, Geraldine Patterson, and Viola Gray.

She also leaves behind her grandchildren Shawn Gathers; Kayla, Karyn, Kelly, and Kevin Clark; Crystal (Keith) Lynch; Benjamin and Trent Gibson; Stephanie, James III, Ja’Inea, Kennetha, Carle Myers, and Tiana Yancey, along with many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.

Friends will be received on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, 921 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown, PA, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Theresa A. Jones will officiate.
