Emanuel Toney, 77, of Johnstown, went to be with Our Lord on May 22, 2026. Born on October 19, 1948, he was the son of Fess Sr. and Carrie Toney (Smith). He was preceded in death by his parents, Fess Sr. and Carrie Toney (Smith); his brothers, Fess Jr., Alraphus Sr., Edward Toney, and Willie D.; his sisters, Ida Britt, Lois McGhee, Doris Tisinger, Mary Jackson, and Creola Rawles (Fred); and his in-laws, James Britt Sr., Earl Jackson Sr., Matthew Tisinger Sr., Leroy Lawrence, Georgia Hill, Charles Gunby Sr., Fronnie Gunby, Brenda Rose (Donald), Arlene Cade (Samuel), and Addie Hodge (Gary). Emanuel is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Linda Toney (Gunby); his children, Demetrius Toney (Shamicka), Mashon Lindsay (Marlon), Seth Toney (April), and Leah Slocum; his grandchildren, Jymil Toney, Tyler Toney, Deshon Toney, Briel Slocum, Kemper Toney, and Kyper Toney; his sisters, Joann Lawrence and Ruby Toney (Kenneth); his in-laws, Charles Gunby Jr. (Helen), Tony Gunby, and Bertha Tripplin; along with a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends. Emanuel showed fatherly love and guidance to hundreds of children during the more than 30 years that he and his wife served as foster parents. Deacon Emanuel Toney faithfully served at St. James Baptist Church in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, for more than 40 years. A Purple Heart recipient, he retired from the U.S. Army after being critically injured while serving in Vietnam. Our Lord blessed him with a second chance at life through a kidney transplant from a selfless donor. The Toney family extends heartfelt thanks to the donor, doctors, and medical staff whose tireless care allowed him to thrive with his new kidney. Family and friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Picking-Treece-Bennett Funeral Home, 921 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown, PA 15905. Emanuel’s Homegoing Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Stevens Memorial Church, 314 William Penn Ave., Johnstown, PA 15901, with Revs. James Britt, Theodore Tisinger, Clyde Williams, Jr., and Charles Johnson concelebrants. Committal will follow at Benshoff Hill Cemetery.
