Ethel Carr Obituary

Ethel Geraldine (Howling) Carr, (97) of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, went to be with our Lord and Saviour on December 9, 2023, at home surrounded by her family with whom she loved so much.  Born on January 25, 1926, in Lebonon Tenn; daughter of Willie and Marie Howling, she and her parents migrated to Johnstown, Pa., when Geraldine was six months of age. Geraldine is the last surviving sibling of eight children.  Ethel is proceeded in death by her parents and her husband Stanley P. Carr, Sr.; infant daughter Victoria; siblings Peter Howling, Helen Jackson, twins Doris Howling, Dorothy Watson, Arlene Jefferson, Robert Howling and Luke DeBose Jr., two grandchildren, one great-grandchild.

She is survived by children:  Jacqueline Lightfoot, husband Artie J.; Rodney Howling, wife Stephanie; Brenda Howling; Deborah Coleman, husband Calvin; Sylvia Carr; Charlene Smothers, Stanley P. Carr Jr., wife Melinda; and step-son Rev. Cleo Carr, wife Carol; and three step-children, Rosie, Loretta and Toogie Carr.  Geraldine also leaves twenty-eight grandchildren, fifty-nine great-grandchildren, seventeen great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Geraldine graduated from the Greater Johnstown High School.  After graduation she worked various jobs in the city until she became a full time Homemaker for her family.

She attended Bethel A.M.E. Church as a very young child, she raised all her children up in Bethel A.M.E.  Church where she remained a faithful member her entire life.  She was the Mother of the Church, working with the Kitchen Club, and helping out where help was needed.  She enjoyed visiting all the Churches in the City.  When attending church she would always be seen wearing a hat from her collection, “her belief was taken from Corinthian 11:5, she said it showed obedience’s to God.”  “She also said it’s a tradition.    Showing  pride, and devotion.”  She didn’t consider herself dressed without a hat, especially when attending church.

Geraldine joined Mecca Temple #294 in 1975, she served these principles offices: Daughter Ruler, Vice Daughter Ruler, Recording Secretary, Financial Secretary, and Escort.  She was also a member of Alfa Council #1, Past State President’s Council, a member of the Past State President’s Council and a member of the Past State President’s Club, of the PA State Auxiliary.

Her favorite pastime was being with her family, checking on her friends, crossword puzzles, feeding the birds that accumulated in her yard.  If she was unable to feed them she always reminded whoever was around to feed the birds.  She loved traveling, October 2022 she was able to attend her grandson’s wedding in Virginia Beach, only to be ready to attend her granddaughter 50th Birthday Party in Houston Texas in February 2023.  We would say, Mom it’s a long trip by car, were flying, and she would say I’m ready.  She tried to attend all family events, near or far.  Birthdays were special, because you were sure to receive a phone call from her singing Happy Birthday in her Patti LaBelle voice, we waited patiently for that call.

Geraldine will be sadly misses by all who knew her; family, friends all knew her as “Gram” or “Ma”.

Friends will be received at Bethel A.M.E. Church, on Friday December 15, 2023 from 3:00-7:00 PM, when the Daughters of I.B.P.O.E. Mecca Temple #294 will have a memorial service, and on Saturday December 16, 2023 from noon until the time of services at 1:00 PM.  Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery.  Arrangements by Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, Inc, 921 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown, PA 15905
