Martha was a sweet, kind, gracious, generous, and loving person. She was graced with a deep faith in God and had a special devotion to the Holy Family. Her prayers were simple, and started with “Jesus, Mary, Joseph.” In times of challenges or problems, she would tell us to “have faith.” From her unwavering faith, came her unconditional love for her family and friends, her optimism and compassion, and her belief in the healing power of forgiveness. Her genuine interest in others attracted affection across all age groups so that she was known by non-relatives with endearing titles such as Mom M, Mama M, Mama Martha, Mrs. M., and Grandma Martha.
Family was everything for Martha; times spent with them were the most cherished. When it came to helping them, she drew upon deep wells of love, compassion, and strength. She nursed her beloved husband, Alex, for the last fifteen years of his life. After his death in 2001, she became involved with her church, becoming a member of the St. John Gualbert Service Group, where she made many new and wonderful friends. She also volunteered her help with the projects of the Christian Life and Service Committee. She enjoyed reading newspapers, especially The Wall Street Journal, remembered everything that she read, and was teased by her dear family for regularly quoting their articles.
The prayer support of family and friends, the cards, visits, texts, phone calls and inquiries during her illness meant so much to our family. We appreciated each one. The family wishes to especially thank the staff of Windber Hospice for their compassionate help these last five months.
