Mary J. Kendig

Mary J. Kendig (Smokey) was born December 28, 1946 and passed away peacefully at her home on June 10, 2026 at the age of 79.  Her husband Richard was at her side.  Her passing ended a marriage of 47 years, celebrated on June 2, 2026.  Smokey was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Jessie Saloney and by siblings Wanda Coolbaugh, Charlie, Mitch, and Johnny Saloney, as well as numerous aunts and uncles.  She is survived by her husband Richard, stepdaughters Laurie Fessler (Rick) and Becky Shirk; sister Dawn Benito, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.  Smokey and Richard shared grandchildren Brett Byers, Cory Fessler (Courtney), Shawn Fessler, Dr. Megan Fessler and Tyler, A.J., and Alexis Wise.  Smokey made a career in the sewing industry with her many talents and supervisory skills as a seamstress.  She continued sewing and altering clothing as a hobby long after she retired, especially Dr. Megan’s prom dresses.  Smokey loved to play golf and was a long-time member of Windber Country Club.  She enjoyed bowling and was president of the ladies Toppers Bowling League for many years.  The world was a better place because of Smokey.  Her generosity was felt by so many people and it always came with a smile. She was by far the most welcoming and hospitable person one could ever meet.  Her home was always “the place to be”.  Smokey was the friend everyone wished they had.  The family would like to thank 365 Hospice and their staff, especially RN Mary Ann for the loving care they provided Smokey over the past two years.  Also, a very special thanks to Tammy for providing the extraordinary day to day care for Smokey.  At Smokey’s request, there will be no viewing or services.  The family is being served by the Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, and thanks goes to them as well.  May she rest in peace.
