The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown is mourning the passing of a senior priest.
Reverend John F. Brezovec passed on May 19, 2025.Father Brezovec was born on July 13, 1941, in Conemaugh, son of the late John and Jennie (Kusher) Brezovec. Survived by brother Robert and wife Linda (Pribish); nephews Robert, John and wife Stacey; great nephews Zachary, Justin, Chase & Carson along with great niece Riley. Also survived by devoted care givers Maria and Daphne. He enjoyed reading and listening to music, especially Frank Sinatra, and attending family get-togethers.
He attended the Pontifical College Josephinum in Ohio and the Pontifical Urban University in Rome.
He was ordained to the priesthood by Pope Paul VI on December 16, 1966, at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. From 1967 until 1993. Father Brezovec was a professor at the Pontifical College Josephinum.
In 1993, he was appointed Parochial Vicar at Saint John Gualbert Cathedral in Johnstown and St. Joseph’s and was later assigned to Hospital Chaplaincy in the Johnstown area, while continuing to reside and assist at Saint John Gualbert.
He was appointed to Senior Priest status in 2016, after 50 years in the priesthood.
A public visitation for Father Brezovec will be held on May 23, 2025, at Saint John Gualbert Cathedral beginning at 1:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will follow at 2:00 p.m. on May 23 at Saint John Gualbert Cathedral. Interment at Grandview Cemetery.
