Rev. Lloyd Wilson Obituary

The Reverend Lloyd T. Wilson, 99, of Johnstown, PA, passed away on October 11 at home.

He was born in Dale Borough, Johnstown, on January 9, 1922, son of the late Frank L. and Hilda (Schmidt) Wilson, also preceded in death by his beloved wife Hazel (Huston), infant daughter Eileen Kay, infant grandson Jacob Gruss, sister Sara Hoffman, brothers John and Paul, and son-in-law Robert Rush.  He is survived by his daughters, Gail Rush, Stephen City, VA and Donna Gruss (Burl Knupp), New Florence, PA. In addition, he is survived by four grandchildren, Jody (Jason) Chesla, York, PA, Sara (Jeremy) Stehle, Fairfax, VA, John (Amber) Gruss IV, Round Hill, VA, and Kaysee (Robert Dwyer) Gruss, Centreville, VA; and seven great grandchildren: Jacob, Joseph, and Jessica Chesla, Jackson, Erin, and Anna Stehle, and Isaac Gruss.

Lloyd graduated from Dale Borough High School, Johnstown, PA, in 1938 and Cambria-Rowe Business College, Johnstown, PA, in 1940. He was employed for two years by the War Department, Washington DC and served in the US Army for 3 years in Baltimore, MD and Camp Claiborne, LA during WW II. Returning to Johnstown in 1946, he attended the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown for 2 years, then attended and graduated from Susquehanna University in 1950. He then went on to the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, PA, where he graduated in 1953.

Ordained as a Lutheran Minister by Central PA Synod of the United Lutheran Church of America on September 20, 1953, Lloyd served as pastor of the Lutheran parishes in Orrstown, Lavansville/Bakersville, Watsontown, Roaring Spring, and Meyersdale before retiring on August 31, 1987. During retirement, he served as interim and supply Minister in many Lutheran Churches in the Synod. After retirement, he moved back to Johnstown to a cottage at the Allegheny Lutheran Home where he had been residing ever since.

In 34 years of ministry, he served as a board member for Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries and for Sequanota Lutheran Conference Center. He was Secretary of the Lutheran Men's League of Johnstown. In retirement, he was a regular Sunday supply Minister, and he coordinated supply ministers for the Allegheny Lutheran Synod. He was a member of Johnstown Post 0945 American Legion. He was an avid photographer and took many pictures of events wherever he lived.

A viewing will be held Friday, October 15 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Picking Treece Bennett Mortuary; 921 Menoher Blvd, Johnstown and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 600 Ash St, Johnstown. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., Bishop Paula Schmitt officiant, and Rev. Toby Holland assisting. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
