Shirley Young

Shirley Spivey Brown-Young was born January 15, 1936 to Hattie Spivey and Franklin Murphy in Johnstown, PA. She was raised by Quincy and William Brown. She is one of four siblings, all of whom preceded her in death. Shirley was a devout member of Saint James Missionary Baptist Church where she served as an usher for many decades. Shirley was a community mother; to know her was to love her. Shirley worked across many fields in her life yet her favorite job was being a foster grandparent at Greater Johnstown Elementary School where she worked until 2023. All of her life, Shirley petitioned God to bless her with a family that she could “call her own.” God answered her prayers with 5 children, 18 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 18 great great-grandchildren; deeming her the matriarch of five generations. She is loved & adorned; she will be missed tremendously yet never forgotten. We love you. Friends will be received on Saturday from 11 until the time of service at noon at St. James Missionary Baptist Church., Rev. Dr. Ralph E. Johnson officiating.
