William A. Deter, 83, born October 18, 1935, in Johnstown, passed away April 11, 2019. Born in Johnstown to the late Alden J. and C. Eleanor (Schonhardt) Deter. Bill is survived by his wife, Roberta Margaret (Balazik) Deter and daughter, Roberta Sobol (David), NY; sons, David Deter (Maria), Erie; Thomas Deter (Michele), Johnstown; Ronald Deter (Vickie) Johnstown, and his brother, John Deter (Mary) of Johnstown. Bill was predeceased by grandson, Jeffrey Sobol and survived by grandchildren: Kyle, Megan, Billy and Nicholas Deter and Michael Sobol; step-grandchildren, Anthony Tupek (Stacy), Mark Tupek (Nicole); step-great grandchildren Alivia, Adalyn and Aaron as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was President of the Greater Johnstown Catholic Athletic Association; member of the Greater Johnstown Saddle Club and Best of Friends Therapeutic Riding Club; Knights of Columbus; league director for parochial football and basketball for many years; and lector at St. Andrew’s Church. Bill was an avid sports fan of Bishop McCort High School and Notre Dame. Bill served in the U.S. Army. He retired from Prudential Insurance Company in 1995. He filmed McCort’s football and basketball games for many years. He enjoyed riding his horse, Gypsey. Bill loved his family and was devoted to his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Church where friends will meet for a funeral mass Monday, at 2:30 pm with Fr. Angelo Patti officiating. Friends received at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, Inc. Sunday, 3-7 pm. Interment, mausoleum at St. Joseph Cemetery, Johnstown, PA. Unlimited gratitude goes to all the compassionate, friendly staff at Conemaugh Memorial Palliative Care and Hospice. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Bishop McCort or St. Andrew’s.
