Irma Y. (Medvecky) Opacic

Irma Y. Opacic, 87, Johnstown, died December 27, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center.  She was born June 2, 1929 in Johnstown, the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Glosik) Medvecky.  Preceded in death by husband of 65 years, Steve Opacic, Jr., in August 2013; brothers, John, Stephen, Joseph,  and Andrew Medvecky, Jr.; sister, Anna Havrilak.  Survived by daughter, Judith married to Andrew Gleason, Johnstown; son, Mark married to Julia Pahountis, Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Dr. Matthew Opacic and wife, Seinin and Anna Opacic.  Also survived by sisters-in-law, Mary Medvecky, Doris Opacic and Dolores Opacic.  Irma was a graduate of Johnstown High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in 1971, where she was honored to be selected to give the commencement address.   She taught in the Johnstown School District and then was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. Irma was a Director of the Cambria City Mission and the Cambria County Board of Assistance.  Irma and her husband, Steve enjoyed traveling across the United States.  She was also a member of Christ the Saviour Cathedral, where she was the rectory secretary for years and was a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent and where funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, the Very Rev. Protopresbyter Robert Buczak.  Prayers will begin at 10 AM, at the funeral home. Friends will be received from 2-7 PM, Friday, at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, Inc., 921 Menoher Blvd., where Panachida will be recited.  Interment Grandview Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ the Saviour Cathedral Sunday School, 300 Garfield Street, Johnstown, PA 15906 or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
